Riska and Her Mother: A 1,400-Kilometer Journey for a Dream

A story of a mother’s love, a child’s determination, and 90 minutes that changed everything.

At 05:30 AM, the doors of Salwa Salon Fatmawati were already buzzing. Outside, the Makassar sky had just begun to blush, but inside, we had already turned on the lights and prepared our brushes. This was a usual morning for us—a graduation morning. A morning where students arrive with sparkling eyes, nervous, and full of hope. A morning where we share in the happiness of those who are about to complete an important chapter in their lives.

But that morning, something was different.

When Riska and her mother entered, there was an immediate aura. Not just ordinary happiness. There was something deeper—something that made all of us in the salon pause for a moment and smile.

The Journey That Began in Kolaka

Riska was not from Makassar. She came from Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi—a small town approximately 1,400 kilometers away if you travel by land and sea. It was not an easy journey. A journey that took time, effort, and cost.

But Riska did not come alone.

Beside her was a woman with a gentle smile and eyes that welled up every time she looked at her daughter. Her mother. The woman who had accompanied Riska every step of the way, from the first day she dreamed of flying, until today—the day that dream would be officially recognized with a diploma from Dirgantara Flight School.

“I didn’t want to miss this moment,” said her mother, holding Riska’s hand tightly. “My daughter has always said, ‘Mom, one day I want to be a pilot.’ I always believed her. And today, here we are.”

Her voice trembled. Her eyes welled up. But her smile? Her smile was that of a mother seeing her child reach for the stars.

90 Minutes to Change Everything

Riska and her mother arrived at the salon at six in the morning. Graduation started at eight. That meant we had less than two hours to make Riska look and feel like a queen—as every graduate should on their big day.

Fatmawati Tahir, one of our most reliable makeup artists, immediately took charge. She didn’t panic. She wasn’t rushed. She knew exactly what to do.

“Okay, Riska,” Fatma said with a warm smile. “Today we’re going to make you not just beautiful, but also confident. We have 90 minutes. That’s enough.”

And so began the transformation process.

More Than Just Makeup, It’s a Beauty Ritual

Fatma started by cleansing Riska’s face. This wasn’t just a procedural step. This was a moment for Riska to breathe, release her nervousness, and begin to feel that she deserved this moment.

After cleansing, Fatma applied moisturizer, serum, and primer—the foundation that makes makeup not only beautiful but also long-lasting. “We want you to keep glowing until the event is over,” Fatma said, blending the foundation with a soft sponge.

Concealer was applied under Riska’s eyes, concealing the bags from late nights finishing her thesis and flight training. Translucent powder was gently patted on, making the makeup look natural yet matte.

Then, eye makeup.

Fatma chose brown and gold—elegant colors, perfectly matching Riska’s graduation gown theme. Eyeshadow was carefully applied, creating dimension on her eyelids. Thin eyeliner made Riska’s eyes look sharper, more confident. Mascara was applied in layers, making her eyelashes perfectly curled.

“Look, Mom,” Riska said, turning to her mother who was sitting beside her. “Am I pretty?”

Her mother smiled. Tears began to fall. “Beautiful, my dear. Absolutely beautiful.”

Simple Hairdo, Profound Meaning

After the makeup was done, it was time for the hair. Fatma knew that with limited time, the hairstyle had to be simple yet elegant. She chose a low bun hairdo with a simple ribbon accessory—a style that made Riska look neat, feminine, and professional.

Riska’s hair was meticulously styled into a bun, every strand tidied, and a small white ribbon was added as the finishing touch. Simple, yet perfect.

At 07:45 AM, Riska stood in front of the large mirror in the salon.

For the first time that morning, she truly saw herself. No longer the Riska who stayed up late. No longer the Riska tired from flight training. But Riska the graduate. Riska the aspiring pilot. Riska who had traversed thousands of kilometers—both literally and figuratively—to arrive at this moment.

“Thank you, Kak Fatma,” she whispered softly. “I feel… beautiful. I feel ready.”

Lessons from a Graduation Morning

After Riska and her mother left for campus, all of us in the salon sat for a moment. There was a warmth left in the room. There was a story bigger than just makeup and hairdo.

We learned something that morning:

  • That beauty is not just about makeup. Beauty is about feeling ready, feeling confident, feeling that you are worthy of the big moments in your life.
  • That the journey is important. Riska didn’t just graduate from pilot school. She embarked on a long journey from Kolaka, from a small dream in a small town, to the graduation stage in Makassar. And her mother accompanied her every step of the way.
  • That time is not an obstacle. 90 minutes might sound short, but with the right technique, attentive touches, and sincere intention, 90 minutes can change everything.
